January 2009 Update

At the start of 2009 we can look back on some major achievements since we launched the 'Houses for Heroes' Appeal only eight months ago.

Perhaps the most important one was the completion of the first phase of the building programme, comprising four houses at Motherwell in Lanarkshire, on 15th December. This meant that our first two tenants were able to move in by Christmas. One is a former Senior NCO in the Royal Signals who, during his 22 years service, lost part of one leg and the sight of one eye in a vehicle accident. The other is a young private soldier from The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, who is having to leave the Army as a result of very serious injuries, including the loss of the use of one hand, suffered during operations in Afghanistan. Just the sort of 'hero' that the Appeal is designed to help.

We remain on course to start the build of ten houses at New Scone, near Perth, in the early spring and that of four bungalows at Penicuik, south of Edinburgh, in the summer. Two of our existing houses, both bungalows at Airdrie built in 1955, have recently become empty. We plan to completely refurbish both of them, converting them to full wheel chair accessiblity, as soon as possible. Providing we can obtain planning permission we hope to build a further one or two bungalows in the extensive rear gardens. This phase, when completed, will provide significant additional wheel chair accessible housing in the key Greater Glasgow area much earlier than originally planned. With the four houses already built at Motherwell we will, if all goes well, have provided 20 houses by the end of 2009, or one-third of the way towards our target of 60 houses.

Group Captain Bob Kemp, Director Scotland, RAF Benevolent Fund, hands over a cheque for £100,000 from the Fund for the Motherwell Project to Mr and Mrs Bernard Sweeney (right and left) of the Motherwell Committee and Association Chairman (2nd from right).

We cannot begin to adequately express the huge thanks we owe to those who have made what we have already achieved possible. As we approach the half-way mark we are even more determined to push on to achieve our target of £6M, but we appreciate that the task from now on will grow much harder in the present economic situation. Equally, however, the urgent need for the new, disabled access, 'Houses for Heroes' continues to grow with the ever lengthening casualty lists, especially from Afghanistan.

We have set up our web-site at probably the most important moment of the Association’s history since the mid-1950's, when we completed most of our post World War 2 building programme. We have started building the first of a planned 60 or so disabled friendly, single storey or single floor houses, spread over a number of locations across Scotland. These are needed to meet the growing demand for houses from those younger Veterans who are casualties of the conflicts of the last 25 years, from the Falklands through to the ongoing ones in Iraq and Afghanistan. The formal launch of the appeal to raise a target of £6 million to fund this building programme took place in the presence of the First Minister Alex Salmond in Edinburgh, 30th April 2008. We are grateful for any donations from individuals or groups.

All the above has only been made possible as the result of the enormous support the Appeal has received from a number of major Service Charities, Charitable Trusts, Companies, Clubs and individuals. This has taken us to a total, either received or pledged, of £2,587,000 as at 31st December 2008 - well beyond our most optimistic hopes in such a short time. Our Appeal costs, covered from Association funds, continue to be very tightly controlled and still stand at only £8,100, or less than one-third of one percent of the total raised.
